Home      Quality & specifications The main producer of poles is the forest itself. First class raw material is obtained from the trees of the natural northern pine forests of Finland and Sweden. This zone is situated between latitudes 60 and 64 North. Timber specialists and experienced wood pole users in various countries around the world confirm this zone to be the world's best region for high-quality pine. As a species, Scots Pine (Pinus silvestris) is given the highest marks in the leading international pole standards.   Since Scots Pine is the only pine in Scandinavian forests, all orders are made exclusively of this prime species. Pine trees grow slowly in northern lands. For them to reach the thickness required for telecommunication poles takes about 50 years, and trees suitable for medium voltage poles are generally as much as 80 years of age or even older. This slow growth results in stronger wood. On average 8 to 12 annual rings are counted for 25 mm of wood - the more the better! Standards Scandinavian pine poles meet the highest requirements of the relevant wood pole specifications adopted worldwide, such as: British Standard Specification 1990 Norme Francaise C 67-100 German Standard DIN 48 350 National Standard of Canada CAN3-015 American National Standard ANSI 05.1 European EN 351, as well as many others. In addition to the many sizes of these standards, FINNTREPO produces wood poles to dozens of other specifications in lengths from 7 m to 20 m and over. Offers and deliveries are tailor-made for each customer's needs for telecommunication lines and for power lines up to 220 kV. Treatment The main objective of pole treatment at the FINNTREPO plants is full penetration of the sapwood, no matter how thick it is. To achieve this, our company's internal guidelines exceed those of many international standards. Only full penetration of the sapwood ensures the maximal protection of wood. The treatment methods utilized are those ensuring the longest service life for the poles under different circumstances: Empty-cell method, also known as the Rueping process, is used in creosote impregnation. Full-cell method, also known as the Bethell process, is in use for waterborne, such as copper-based impregnation solutions. Poles are enclosed in pressure cylinders in both processes. By using suitable pressures and vacuums a sufficient amount of treatment solution is pressed into the poles.         © Copyright Finntrepo Ltd.
